Cognac isn’t exactly a staple drink for most, with many not knowing what it is and assuming it’s a fancy and expensive spirit for uptight and elite individuals. Luckily however, there is about as much truth in this as calling a Tikka Masala a traditional Indian curry. With bottles purchasable from under £30 and an ever-growing following of “ordinary” and “young” folk, cognac is a glorious spirit open to all willing to give it a go, and happily, formidable booze nerds The Whisky Exchange, are giving you the chance to sample from over 150 cognacs at The Cognac Show 2019 on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th April.

First thing’s first: What is Cognac?
Cognac is brandy (a grape-based, oak-aged spirit) that is produced (unsurprisingly) in the Cognac region (northern Bordeaux, France) and is twice distilled in a traditional copper pot still. Its taste depends on fruit quality, ageing and a number of other factors, however broadly speaking, it’s sweeter than whisky with dried fruit characteristics and a textural smoothness from its ageing process. Well-known brands include Hennessy, Martell, Rémy Martin, Courvoisier and Frapin.
What is The Cognac Show?
Named “Best Drinks Events 2018” by The Drinks Business, The Cognac Show is a celebration of this fine French spirit, and will showcase over 150 cognacs, as well as offering visitors delicious cocktails and mouth-watering food-pairings. With sensory experiences from the likes of Rémy Martin, Hennessy and Frapin; food pairings from Martell; cocktails served up by mixologist Guillaume Le Dorner from cognac-cocktail-Mecca, Bar Luciole; and masterclasses throughout the two-day show, there’s something for both the connoisseur wanting to try some free dream drams and the complete novice wanting to learn more.
