The Lakes Gin Explorer Edition Review

The Lakes Gin Explorer Edition reached the top of the world, literally speaking, when Alan Chambers MBE decided to bring it with him to the North Pole, giving new meaning to the serving suggestion “To be drunk chill or on ice”.

The Lakes Gin Explorer Edition Alan Chambers

Initially launched in the Summer of 2016 as a limited edition by The Lakes Distillery, the original 2,200 bottles sold out so rapidly and caused such a sensation that the decision was made to bring The Lakes Gin Explorer Edition into the family. Since then, it has received 2 IWSC medals and has become one of our favourite sipping gins to date (read our article about The Lakes Distillery here).

Created using a selection of 15 botanicals, including five that are native to The Lake District (including the Cumbrian juniper) and with a bumped up ABV of 47.1%, this is a truly remarkable sipping gin that is a leader in the Super Premium range.

Tasting Notes: The Lakes Gin Explorer Edition

The Nose

The first aromas are of zesty orange citrus, herbaceous coriander and warming cassia bark. Cracked black pepper pricks at the nostrils and a fragrant allusion to fresh Earl Grey tea shows itself at the end.

The Taste

Smooth, generous and exquisitely herbal; the palate is complex, with the unmistakable presence of juniper and coriander. Unlike its sibling, The Lakes Gin, The Explorer Edition focuses on signature botanicals, making it more herbal and peppery than its classic counterpart. Despite the high ABV, it is delicate and smooth, gliding over the tongue with ease yet leaving lingering notes of its cracked spice character.

Suggested Serve

Whilst we may not all be able to battle our way to the North Pole, The Lakes Gin The Explorer Edition can undoubtedly be served chilled and neat. If after your first, you wish to couple of ice cubes or a smattering of premium tonic, you will find that this opens the gin up to reveal its more subtle flavours.

Price

Available at the exceptionally reasonable price of £39.95 (70cl) from The Lakes Distillery.
